      Valdez (3-3) took the loss against Seattle on Monday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four batters over six innings.

      Advice: Valdez looked to be in for a rough night after giving up three runs on four hits in the first inning, but he settled in from there and yielded just two hits and no runs the rest of the way. That allowed him to squeak by with a quality start, though he nonetheless ended with his second straight loss. Valdez gave up eight runs over five frames against the Angels in his previous appearance, so this was a decent bounce-back despite the difficult first inning.     • Framber Valdez turns in quality start in loss
      Framber Valdez surrendered three runs in six innings Monday in a no-decision versus the Mariners.

      Advice: All of the runs scored in the first, an inning that could have been much worse if Jake Meyers didn’t cover half of the outfield to chase down a Cal Raleigh fly with the bases loaded. Valdez still gave up four hits that inning, but he allowed just two more the rest of the way. Nevertheless, he still took the loss in a 3-2 game, leaving him 3-3 with a 4.34 ERA for the season.     • Michael Busch sits for second straight game
      Michael Busch is not in the Cubs’ lineup on Monday against the Brewers.

      Advice: With the Brewers throwing a left-handed pitcher, Busch will find himself on the bench; however, he was also on the bench on Sunday. The rookie is hitting 12-for-64 (.188) in May with one home run and a 39.2 percent strikeout rate. If he doesn’t start picking it up soon, it’s fair to wonder how much longer the Cubs will keep him in the starting lineup. Patrick Wisdom will get the start on Monday and has now started three games in a row. He’d likely benefit the most from a decision to dial back on Busch’s playing time.     • Wins with quality start
      Quantrill (4-3) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings Sunday, striking out five and earning a win over the Phillies.

      Advice: Quantrill held the Phillies off the scoreboard through three frames before giving up a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. He forced 18 whiffs, blowing by his previous season high of 12. Quantrill produced his fifth straight quality start, going 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA during that span. Prior to this hot streak, he was 0-3 with a 5.34 ERA to begin the year. Quantrill now owns a 3.53 ERA and a 49:23 K:BB through 63.2 innings.     • Tanner Houck strong for six innings in no-decision
      Tanner Houck pitched six innings of one-run ball against the Brewers on Sunday.

      Advice: Houck struck out seven and walked none in his latest excellent outing. Alas, he didn’t get the victory, as the Red Sox only scored their second run in the bottom of the eighth.       Houck did not factor into the decision Sunday against Milwaukee, allowing one earned run on seven hits and one walk through six innings. He struck out seven.

      Advice: Houck was excellent yet again, marking his third consecutive start allowing one earned run or fewer. The 27-year-old has not allowed a home run since April 12, and his microscopic 0.14 HR/9 leads the league. Houck (4-5) now owns a 1.90 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 71 innings this year.     • Falls triple short of cycle
      Olson went 3-for-5 with a home run, double, three RBI and a run scored Sunday against the Pirates.

      Advice: Olson's eighth-inning blast off Aroldis Chapman was a no-doubter over the right field wall, clearing the stadium and splashing down in the Allegheny River. Olson had previously added a two-run double and finished the game just a triple short of the cycle. Over his last 13 games, Olson has six multi-hit efforts, batting .308 with four homers, two doubles, 11 RBI and six runs scored in that span. Rotowire.com Sunday, 4:53 pm

    • Ha-Seong Kim leads Padres past Yankees on Sunday
      Ha-Seong Kim went 2-for-3 with a walk, run scored and an RBI on Sunday afternoon, leading the Padres to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Yankees.

      Advice: Kim drove in the go-ahead run with a bunt single off of Victor Gonzalez in the seventh inning, then came around to score on an infield single off the bat of Fernando Tatis Jr. With his two-hit attack, the dynamic 28-year-old infielder is now hitting .216/.333/.362 with six homers, 23 RBI and 13 stolen bases on the season.     • Cal Quantrill stymies Phillies offense in win
      Cal Quantrill allowed two runs on three hits in six innings in a win over the Phillies on Sunday.

      Advice: This is now the fifth straight good start for Quantrill and the eighth start in his last nine where he has allowed two runs or fewer. He got hit hard by the Astros at home on April 27th, but other than that outing, he has allowed a total of seven earned runs over eight stats. He’s also picked up four wins in that span but struck out just 27 batters over those 43 2/3 innings. As a splitter/sinker pitcher, Quantrill does seem perfectly suited to pitching his games at Coors Field, and he’s clearly the Rockies starter to trust if you wanted to trust one.
