• Michael Grove starting bullpen game on Thursday
Michael Grove will start on Thursday against the Rangers.

Advice: Grove draws the starting assignment to kick-off a bullpen game for Los Angeles with Yoshinobu Yamamoto being pushed back to take the ball on Saturday against the Royals after throwing a season-high 108 pitches his last time out. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:00 pm

  • Hunter Stratton dealing with shoulder tightness
Hunter Stratton was removed from Thursday’s relief appearance against the Cardinals due to right shoulder tightness.

Advice: Pirates manager Derek Shelton told reporters afterwards that Stratton was experiencing some shoulder tightness and the club didn’t want to take any chances. He’s currently undergoing additional testing and there should be some clarity on his status in the coming days. It seems likely he’ll wind up requiring a trip to the injured list, but anything is possible. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:40 pm
  • Hunter Stratton departs with trainer on Thursday
Hunter Stratton was removed from Thursday’s relief appearance against the Cardinals with an apparent injury.

Advice: Stratton gestured to his right shoulder after throwing a pitch during a relief appearance on Thursday against the Cardinals and immediately exited the contest with a trainer. He’ll head for some additional testing to determine the severity of the issue. There should be an update on his status in the coming days, but it would be surprising if this wasn’t an injured list situation. Rotoworld Yesterday, 1:45 pm
  • Exits appearance with injury
Stratton was removed from Thursday's appearance in St. Louis with an apparent right shoulder injury, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Advice: Stratton was facing his second batter after entering in the bottom of the eighth inning and immediately grabbed at his shoulder after delivering a pitch to Brendan Donovan. The Pirates should have more on the reliever's condition after the game. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 1:35 pm
  • Bounces back
Kopech struck out two and walked one without allowing a hit in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday against the Mariners.

Advice: Kopech imploded to allow three earned runs and blow a lead in an appearance Monday, but he managed to bounce back in this outing. He entered the game with the score tied at 1-1 and turned in just his third scoreless effort in his last five appearances. Kopech remains the White Sox's primary closer, though his last save came on May 15. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:43 am
  • Opening Thursday's contest
Manager Dave Roberts said Grove will serve as the Dodgers' opening pitcher for Thursday's game against the Rangers, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Grove made 18 starts with the Dodgers between the 2022 and 2023 seasons, but he's worked almost exclusively as a reliever in 2024. During his lone other start this season back on April 28 against the Blue Jays, Grove covered just two innings and gave up three earned runs before turning the game over to the bullpen. He'll be working Thursday on just one day of rest and is unlikely to cover more than 1-to-3 innings before he exits the contest. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:31 am

  • DFA'd by Pittsburgh
The Pirates designated Hernandez for assignment Tuesday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Advice: A week after being optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, Hernandez will now lose his spot on the 40-man roster in favor of Dennis Santana, who was claimed off waivers Tuesday. The 26-year-old southpaw owns a 4.82 ERA through 56 career MLB innings, but he has not been nearly as successful this season in the minors, posting a 7.04 ERA and 1.85 WHIP through 15.1 frames. • Pirates designate Jose Hernandez for assignment
Pirates designated LHP Jose Hernandez for assignment.

Advice: Hernandez has been removed from Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster to make room for the Bucs to claim reliever Dennis Santana off waivers from the Yankees. The 26-year-old lefty has pitched to a solid 4.82 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 66/26 K/BB ratio across 56 innings (57 appearances) over the last two seasons for the Pirates. He should generate plenty of interest on waivers. Rotoworld Tuesday, 3:07 pm

  • Michael Kopech blows three-run lead in eighth
Michael Kopech gave up three runs in the eighth to take a blown save Monday in the loss to the Mariners.

Advice: Look, we’re not totally blaming Pedro Grifol for tonight’s loss, but that stuff like this keeps happening to the White Sox hardly seems like a coincidence. Grifol left his starter in to begin the eighth in a 4-0 game tonight, only to pull him immediately after a leadoff homer. Kopech, the White Sox’s primary closer, then came in with no outs in the eighth and struggled in retiring just two of the eight batters he faced. That made it a tie game going into the ninth, and Jordan Leasure, the top fallback to Kopech, wound up surrendering a walkoff grand slam, of all things. Everything is a disaster with the White Sox now, and while Kopech still offers value for teams desperate for saves, it’s hard to argue for him in shallow leagues, especially with the way Grifol is treating him.
