Fairbanks struck out two and didn't allow a baserunner in a scoreless eighth inning to pick up a hold Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Advice: Fairbanks entered the game in the eighth inning to face the heart of the Red Sox order and needed only seven pitches to get through the frame. While effective, his usage was concerning given that he had pitched nearly exclusively as a traditional closer early in the season. It's unclear whether manager Kevin Cash might continue to mix and match the back end of his bullpen, but Fairbanks could lose save opportunities moving forward. Rotowire.com Today, 8:23 am
    • Starts rehab assignment
Soler (shoulder) went 0-for-4 with one strikeout in his first rehab game with Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.

Advice: Soler had a freak accident Tuesday when he was hit in the head by a ball while taking batting practice, but he came out of it no worse for wear and was cleared for a rehab assignment. The slugger is coming back from a right shoulder strain and should be activated by the Giants in the coming days. Rotowire.com Today, 7:09 am

    • Strong outing in win
Canning (2-4) earned the win over the Cardinals on Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over six innings while striking out five.

Advice: Canning allowed multiple baserunners in two of his first four innings but managed to work his way through it unscathed. He would later surrender a home run to Paul Goldschmidt to open the sixth, but that would be the only run allowed by the right-hander on the night as he cruised to his second win of the season. Canning produced 12 swinging strikes in the contest and now carries a 13:6 K:BB in May to go along with a 1.53 ERA. It also marked his second quality start of the campaign and the third straight outing in which he's allowed two or fewer runs. Rotowire.com Today, 5:12 am
    • Griffin Canning holds Cardinals to one run in win
Griffin Canning tossed six innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts in a win over the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Advice: Canning put together another excellent outing on Wednesday, holding the Cardinals to one run over six frames. The one run would score on a solo homer by Paul Goldschmidt in the sixth inning. Canning scattered four other hits and three walks while striking out five. The 28-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 5.21 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and a 34/18 K/BB ratio across 46 2/3 innings. He lines up for a start against the Astros in Houston on Tuesday. • Hand injury considered minor
The Mariners aren't concerned about Crawford's (oblique) right hand/wrist after he was hit by a pitch during Wednesday's game at Triple-A Tacoma, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Crawford's HBP forced him to make an early exit from Wednesday's minor-league game, but it appears he managed to escape the incident with no significant damage. The 29-year-old was expected to return from the IL ahead of Seattle's upcoming series versus the Orioles, though it remains unknown if those plans have changed as a result of his sore hand. • Can't contain Colorado
King (3-4) took the loss against the Rockies on Wednesday, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven betters over 5.1 innings.

Advice: King fell behind when he yielded three runs in the second inning, and San Diego's offense never put up a fight against Austin Gomber and a trio of Rockies relievers. King had been on a roll coming into Wednesday, putting up 13 scoreless frames over his previous two starts, but he's been very inconsistent this season, giving up at least four runs in four of his 10 appearances. Altogether, he's registered a mediocre 4.31 ERA and 1.36 WHIP along with a 61:26 K:BB through 54.1 innings. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:15 pm

    • Exits rehab game after HBP
Crawford (oblique) was removed from his rehab game at Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday after getting hit in the hand by a pitch.

Advice: Crawford was visibly in pain after taking a 90-mph fastball off his right hand/wrist and was immediately taken out of the game by a trainer. He has been working his way back from a right oblique strain he suffered in late April, and Wednesday was expected to be his final appearance in the minors before rejoining the Mariners for their weekend series in Baltimore. However, the 29-year-old shortstop's return may be postponed if the damage to his hand proves to be significant. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:14 pm

    • J.P. Crawford exits rehab game after hit by pitch
J.P. Crawford was pulled from his final rehab game at Triple-A Tacoma after being hit by a pitch on his right hand.

Advice: Ouch. That’s certainly not what you want to see, especially when Crawford was set to rejoin the Mariners over the weekend. Presumably he’ll head for X-rays to see if there’s any structural damage. Stay tuned. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:07 pm

    • Bobby Witt Jr. plates both runs in loss to Mariners
Bobby Witt Jr. went 0-for-3 and drove in both of the Royals’ runs in Wednesday afternoon’s loss to the Mariners.

Advice: The 23-year-old superstar finally got the Royals on the board with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, pulling them to within a run at 2-1. He also plated a run with a ground ball in the eighth inning. On the season, he’s now slashing .293/.359/.500 with five homers, 23 RBI and 15 stolen bases. Rotoworld Yesterday, 4:50 pm
