    • Rehab assignment approaching
Manager Craig Counsell said Saturday that Steele (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Counsell didn't say how many starts the Cubs want Steele to make in the minors, but the 28-year-old southpaw is likely in for multiple rehab outings after sitting out nearly a month due to a strained left hamstring. Assuming his assignment goes smoothly, Steele will likely return to Chicago's rotation toward the middle of May. Rotowire.com 3 minutes ago

    • Justin Steele set to make rehab start this week
Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters Saturday that Justin Steele (hamstring) will make a minor league rehab start this week.

Advice: Steele continues to progress towards rejoining Chicago’s starting rotation after landing on the injured list back in late March with a left hamstring strain. The 28-year-old southpaw should be ready to return in early-to-mid May. Rotoworld 25 minutes ago

    • Masataka Yoshida back in lineup Saturday vs. Cubs
Masataka Yoshida is back in the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Cubs.

Advice: Yoshida is back in Boston’s starting lineup for the first time in five contests since last weekend. The 30-year-old slugger holds a .660 OPS with two homers through 22 games this season and has ceded playing time at designated hitter lately due to Rafael Devers’ ongoing physical issues. • Back in starting lineup
Yoshida will start at designated hitter and bat sixth in Saturday's game against the Cubs, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

Advice: Yoshida was not in Boston's starting lineup over the last four games, though he did appear in two contests as a pinch hitter. His absence over the last three games coincided with Rafael Devers starting at DH after missing time due to a left bone bruise, and the Red Sox appear reluctant to start Yoshida in the outfield early in the season. Devers will shift to third base for Saturday's game, while Yoshida resumes his role as the designated hitter against Cubs right-hander Ben Brown. Rotowire.com Today, 8:44 am

    • MRI comes back clean on Pete Fairbanks’ arm
An MRI on Pete Fairbanks’ right arm came back clean for any structural damage.

Advice: Fairbanks landed on the injured list earlier this week with an undisclosed nerve-related condition, so it’s at least an encouraging development that additional imaging didn’t turn up any structural damage. The 30-year-old righty has indicated that his latest issue is unrelated to previous flareups of Raynaud’s syndrome that he’s dealt with. Given the uncertainty surrounding his diagnosis, there isn’t a clear timetable for his return. Rotoworld Today, 8:14 am

    • Two hits in return
Albies went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in Friday's 6-2 win over the Guardians.

Advice: Making his return from a toe injury that cost him eight games, Albies demonstrated quickly that he was fully healthy, ripping a double and scoring in the fifth inning before adding an RBI single in the sixth. The 27-year-old second baseman has a nine-game hitting streak going, sandwiched around the injury absence, and on the season he's slashing .328/.392/.507 with two homers, two steals, 15 runs and 15 RBI. • Tests come back clean
Fairbanks (arm) has no structural damage to his arm, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Fairbanks had an MRI done Tuesday and then had unspecified additional testing done later in the week. All exams came back clean, which is good news and provides some optimism that he'll avoid a lengthy absence. However, both Fairbanks and the team have cautioned that he does not have a timeline to be activated from the injured list. Rotowire.com Today, 7:29 am

    • Punches out 10 in win
Nola (4-1) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over eight innings Friday, striking out 10 and earning a win over the Padres.

Advice: Nola was terrific Friday, posting his first double-digit strikeout game since July 4, 2023. He threw 74 of 106 pitches for strikes and forced 14 whiffs in the victory. The veteran righty had yielded just one run through six frames before Graham Pauley's two-run shot in the seventh inning. Since coughing up six earned runs in his season debut, Nola has posted a stifling 1.29 ERA with a 33:10 K:BB over his last five starts (35 innings). He'll carry a 3.23 ERA into his next appearance, which is projected to come on the road against the Angels next week. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:28 pm
    • Aaron Nola whiffs 10 in victory over Padres
Aaron Nola picked up 10 strikeouts over eight innings of three-run baseball to get a win over the Padres on Friday.

Advice: Nola scattered seven hits allowed with one walk. The only real damage was a two-run homer by Graham Pauley, and that was in the seventh inning with the Padres trailing 9-1. Nola has now gone eight innings in back-to-back starts, and he’s posted a strong 3.20 ERA through the first month of the season. The Angels are next for the right-hander. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:28 pm
