    • Expected back Friday
Merrill (groin) is expected to return to the lineup Friday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Advice: Merrill was scratched Thursday but the issue was deemed precautionary. He spoke to reporters following the Padres' loss and said he feels fine and is adjusting to the rigors of the MLB schedule. While Merrill is expected to return Friday, it will be worth confirming he is in the lineup as San Diego opens a series against the Phillies. Rotowire.com Today, 6:46 pm

    • Gavin Williams shut down with elbow discomfort
Gavin Williams (elbow) has been shut down from throwing for at least one week after experiencing renewed discomfort.

Advice: Not good. Williams has been on the shelf since spring training due to right elbow inflammation and appeared to be getting close to making his season debut prior to this latest setback. The 24-year-old top pitching prospect should be ready to resume throwing next week after receiving a PRP injection. However, there is no official timetable for his return at this juncture. • Jax locks down fourth save of the season
Griffin Jax came to the rescue in the ninth inning to secure a 6-3 win over the White Sox on Thursday.

Advice: The Twins entered the ninth with a 6-2 lead but the White Sox loaded the bases with one out, which brought Jax into the game. He got Eloy Jimenez to strike out, but then an error by Carlos Santana brought in a run and extended the game. Jax was able to induce a groundball to get out of the game and lock down his fourth save of the season. He has a 2.53 ERA on the year and has been solid for the Twins, but his time as the closer could be coming to an end with Jhoan Duran nearing a rehab assignment. Rotoworld Today, 1:59 pm

    • Next start will be Monday
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Thursday that Paxton's next start will be at Arizona on Monday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Advice: Paxton would be on regular rest Sunday after he started Tuesday's game against the Nationals, but the Dodgers will go with a bullpen game Sunday in Toronto and give Paxton an extra day of rest. The southpaw has managed a 2.61 ERA but a 1.55 WHIP and 11:17 K:BB through 20.2 innings this season. Rotowire.com Today, 1:25 pm
    • Jackson Merrill scratched from Thursday’s lineup
Jackson Merrill was scratched from the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Rockies due to right groin tightness.

Advice: The Padres are merely keeping Merrill out of the lineup for Thursday’s series finale for precautionary reasons. Eguy Rosario will start for the Padres on play third base, while Tyler Wade moves to left field and José Azocar goes to center field. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. • Scratched from lineup Thursday
Merrill was scratched from the lineup for Thursday's game in Colorado due to right groin tightness, Manny Randhawa of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Padres manager Mike Shildt said the move was precautionary and Merrill could have played, so it sounds safe to call the rookie outfielder day-to-day. Jose Azocar will shift over to center field, Tyler Wade will move to left and Eguy Rosario will enter the lineup at third base. Rotowire.com Today, 12:02 pm

    • Lasts just four innings in loss
Miller (3-2) took the loss against Texas on Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five batters over four-plus innings.

Advice: Miller made it through three scoreless frames before the Rangers got to him for a pair of solo homers in the fourth. The right-hander did come back out to the mound for the fifth frame, but he was pulled after issuing a leadoff walk, having thrown 83 pitches to that point. Miller's three-game quality start streak was thus snapped, as was his three-game win streak. He'll try to get back on track the next time he takes the mound, which lines up for early next week versus Atlanta. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:25 pm

    • Grabs fourth save
Payamps recorded the save in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Pirates, striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning.

Advice: The Pirates made things interesting in the ninth, getting the tying and go-ahead runs on base on a pair of Milwaukee errors. However, Payamps got Jared Triolo to fly out before striking out Andrew McCutchen to seal the 3-2 victory, notching his fourth save of the year. The 30-year-old Payamps has three saves in his last four outings as he lowered his ERA to 3.72 with a 0.62 WHIP and 9:1 K:BB through 9.2 innings. Payamps appears to be the current favorite for saves but is hardly locked in as Milwaukee's closer, with Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill also in the mix. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:52 pm

    • Notches another save
Jax pitched a perfect ninth inning and struck out one to pick up his third save of the season Wednesday against the White Sox.

Advice: Jax seems to have taken hold of the closing job in place of Jhoan Duran, who's in the midst of a rehab assignment after suffering an oblique injury late in camp. Jax has twirled back-to-back perfect innings for a pair of saves and owns a 2.70 ERA with a 14:3 K:BB over 11 appearances (10 innings), but his run in the ninth inning will likely come to an end soon with Duran nearing activation.
