    • Criswell stymies Giants in win on Tuesday
Cooper Criswell threw five shutout innings in a win over the Giants on Tuesday, allowing two runs while striking out four and walking one.

Advice: It certainly wasn’t an electric start for the right-hander who had just a 15 percent whiff rate, but he posted a 29 percent CSW and got consistent called strikes with his sinker, and his sweeper missed just enough bats for him to be effective. Criswell now has a 1.65 ERA in four appearances and three starts with the Red Sox this season and figures to remain in the rotation for a couple more turns at least. He’s nothing more than a deep league streaming option given his lack of strikeout upside, but he could be startable this weekend against the Twins. Rotoworld 48 minutes ago

    • Gerrit Cole (elbow) continues flat-ground throwing
Gerrit Cole (elbow) continued flat-ground throwing on Tuesday.

Advice: Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters everything is going well with Cole’s throwing program, but the 33-year-old righty remains without a set date to resume throwing off a mound. The assumption remains that he’ll be ready to make his season debut at some point in late May. Rotoworld Today, 1:57 pm

    • Rehab start delayed
Scherzer's (back) rehab start with Double-A Frisco on Tuesday will be pushed back to thumb soreness, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The thumb issue apparently surfaced following Scherzer's start with Triple-A Round Rock on April 24, so he'll have his next outing pushed back. Rangers GM Chris Young hopes the veteran right-hander will be ready to pitch by the end of the week, so it doesn't appear to be a serious issue. Rotowire.com Today, 1:34 pm

    • Vaughn Grissom not returning Tuesday due to illness
Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) will not be activated from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday due to illness.

Advice: Grissom was slated to make his Red Sox debut during Tuesday’s series opener against the Giants, but apparently is feeling under the weather. He should be ready to return at some point later this week. Rotoworld Today, 1:25 pm

    • Dealing with illness
Grissom (hamstring/illness) won't be activated from the injured list Tuesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

Advice: Grissom was expected to make his MLB debut Tuesday after battling a right hamstring injury throughout the early portion of the season. However, it's an illness keeping him from being activated from the 10-day IL, meaning that the second baseman should be considered essentially day-to-day moving forward. Rotowire.com Today, 1:21 pm

    • Max Scherzer dealing with thumb soreness
Max Scherzer (back) will have his next minor league rehab start pushed back to later this week due to thumb soreness.

Advice: Rangers general manager Chris Young told reporters Tuesday that Scherzer is dealing with some lingering thumb soreness in the wake of last Wednesday’s rehab outing for Triple-A Round Rock. However, there’s optimism he’ll be ready to take the ball later this week. The positive news here is the 39-year-old veteran isn’t experiencing any issues with his back following offseason surgery. Barring any additional setbacks, Scherzer should make his season debut at some point in early May. Rotoworld Today, 1:15 pm

    • Receives night off
Varsho is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Royals.

Advice: Varsho won't face the left-handed Cole Ragans on Tuesday as the Blue Jays trot out a lineup of eight righties and Cavan Biggio. The outfielder is 1-for-14 (.071) across his last four games but will likely slide back into the Toronto lineup Wednesday when the Jays face RHP Seth Lugo. Rotowire.com Today, 12:23 pm

    • Swats solo shot Monday
Smith went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional run and a walk in Monday's 8-4 victory against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Smith padded the Dodgers' lead in the sixth inning with a 407-foot solo blast to center field. It was the backstop's second long ball in three games after he went deep just once over his first 23 contests of the campaign. Though he's been pretty quiet in the power department thus far, Smith is having an outstanding start to the season, slashing .363/.404/.539 with 22 RBI and 16 runs through 114 plate appearances. • Another quality start
Ryan didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk across six innings against the White Sox. He struck out three.

Advice: Although Ryan tallied his lowest strikeout total of the campaign, he cashed in on his fourth quality start of his last five appearances. After yielding a pair of home runs to the White Sox in his last start, Ryan limited the team to just one extra-base hit on the day. He owns a 1.3 BB/9 through 34.2 innings in 2024, another improvement after posting a 2.9 BB/9 in 2022 and a 1.9 BB/9 in 2023. Ryan is tentatively scheduled for a start against the Sox of Boston on Sunday. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:35 pm
