    • Velocity ticking up
Smith-Shawver topped 99 mph with three fastballs during his last start for Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The 21-year-old right-hander is still learning the nuances of pitching after mostly playing quarterback in high school, so it's not surprisingly that Smith-Shawver is unlocking more velocity. He struck out a season-high seven batters in five innings for Gwinnett on Wednesday, and while Atlanta is limiting his workload by only having him pitch once a week rather than on a regular five-day schedule, he still figures to be an option for the big-league rotation at some point in 2024. After a couple shaky outings to begin the year at Triple-A, he's given up four runs with a 10:4 K:BB over his last 9.2 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 6:16 am
    • Bats leadoff Monday
Alexander batted leadoff and went 0-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored in Monday's 8-4 loss to the Dodgers.

Advice: Alexander served as the leadoff batter for the first time, as manager Torey Lovullo recently tweaked the top of the order. Primary leadoff batter Ketel Marte has been moved to third in the order. Alexander has been adept at getting on base, posting a .406 OBP over 69 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 4:11 am

    • Logs steal in loss
Witt went 1-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and one run scored in Monday's 6-5 loss to the Blue Jays.

Advice: Witt has picked up his pace on the basepaths with five steals over his last seven games. In that span, he's gone 9-for-27 (.333) with eight RBI. The shortstop is up to nine steals on 12 attempts on the year. He's added a .306/.351/.537 slash line with four home runs, 16 RBI, 24 runs scored, eight doubles and four triples over 30 contests. • Excellent in no-decision
Taillon didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over 7.1 innings. He struck out one.

Advice: Taillon was able to complete six innings for the first time this season and managed to exceed seven innings in just 78 pitches. Taillon's lone blemish came from the first batter he faced as Brandon Nimmo clubbed a solo home run in the first frame. The veteran righty has yet to yield multiple earned runs through three starts, owning an impressive 1.50 ERA. However, he's only been able to punch out nine batters in his 18.0 innings of work. Taillon is set to close out a two-start week with a matchup against the Brewers on Saturday. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:50 pm
    • Jameson Taillon spins another gem in no-decision
Jameson Taillon yielded one run over 7 1/3 innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Mets.

Advice: Taillon authored his third consecutive strong performance since returning from the injured list a couple weeks ago, limiting New York’s strong lineup to just a leadoff homer by Brandon Nimmo, while working into the eighth inning. He notched only one strikeout, but allowed just five baserunners, and only two of eight batted balls with an exit velocity in excess of 95 mph went for hits against him. He’ll bring a sparkling 1.50 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 9/3 K/BB ratio across 18 innings (three starts) into a home outing on Saturday against the Brewers. The lack of strikeouts limits his fantasy appeal moving forward, but he’s looking like a decent streaming option, especially in favorable matchups. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:27 pm
    • Could serve as 27th man Tuesday
The Tigers could call Manning up from Triple-A Toledo to start one game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Advice: Manning's next turn with Toledo falls Tuesday, so he's an obvious option to start for the big club instead. He's previously made two starts with the Tigers this season, giving up four runs while turning in a 10:6 K:BB over 12.1 innings. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:21 pm

    • Blaze Alexander batting lead-off for Diamondbacks
Blaze Alexander is making his first start in the leadoff spot in the lineup on Monday, starting at designated hitter against the Dodgers.

Advice: Jake McCarthy has been hitting lead-off for Arizona over the last week, but he doesn’t play against left-handed pitchers. The last time he sat, it was Ketel Marte who hit lead-off, but today the Diamondbacks will give Alexander a chance. The rookie is slashing .322/.385/.559 with three home runs, 10 runs scored, and 13 RBI in 20 games this season. If he’s now going to also lead-off against left-handed pitching then his value gets another nice little boost. Randal Grichuk is starting for McCarthy in right field and batting sixth against James Paxton. Rotoworld Yesterday, 12:23 pm

    • Integral in win
Duran went 1-for-4 with a walk, triple and two RBI in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Cubs.

Advice: Duran tripled in two runs in the sixth inning then drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth before scoring the winning run on Tyler O'Neill's walk-off single. Duran has started all 29 games thus far, including 27 of them as the team's leadoff batter. He's second on the Red Sox with 17 runs and leads the club in triples with three. Because of Ceddanne Rafaela moving from center field to shortstop, Duran is locked in as Boston's starting center fielder. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 5:47 am

    • Homers in second straight
Tucker went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Sunday against the Rockies.

Advice: Tucker took advantage of the offensive environment in Mexico City, homering in each of Houston's two contests there. He now has seven home runs on the season and has at least one hit in each of his last five starts. It comes as no surprise that Tucker has remained an excellent five-category contributor, highlighted by 39 combined RBI and runs scored as well as five stolen bases across 28 contests.
