  • Nationals announce signing of Matt Wieters
Nationals signed C Matt Wieters to a two-year, $21 million contract.

Advice: The deal was first reported on Tuesday and has now become official. Wieters' contract includes an opt-out after the first year, and $5 million of the salary is deferred. He'll assume everyday catching duties for the Nationals, which will put Derek Norris on the trade market. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:09 am
  • Bethancourt catching two out of three days
Christian Bethancourt has been alternating two days catching and one day pitching at spring training.

Advice: Because mastering one position wasn't enough for Bethancourt, he'll see work behind the plate, in the outfield and on the mound this season. It sounds gimmicky but Bethancourt's pitching prowess is no joke. His fastball sits in the mid-90s and he's also been developing a changeup. Bethancourt won't put up huge numbers but his versatility makes him one of the most fascinating players in baseball. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:45 pm
  • Rangers aren't in talks with Jonathan Lucroy
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Rangers have not discussed a contract extension with Jonathan Lucroy.

Advice: The sides aren't talking yet but Heyman believes they will in the near future. Lucroy was arguably the league's top offensive catcher last season, collecting a .292 average to go with a career-high 24 homers and 81 RBI. If a deal isn't reached, Lucroy will hit the market next offseason. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 1:48 pm
  • Schwarber frontrunner to bat leadoff for Cubs
Cubs manager Joe Maddon confirmed Thursday that Kyle Schwarber is the clear frontrunner to bat leadoff.

Advice: Schwarber doesn't have the physique of a traditional leadoff man, but that bat plays anywhere and the No. 1 spot in the lineup just means more plate appearances. Schwarber, 23, owns an .831 OPS with 16 home runs and 43 RBI through his first 71 major league games. He went 7-for-17 (.412) with three walks last year in the World Series. • Francisco Cervelli (foot) continues rehab
Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk said that Francisco Cervelli (foot) has been cleared for "modified baseball activities."

Advice: Cervelli felt discomfort in his right foot during a workout this past Sunday. While it doesn't appear to be serious, the Pirates would like to make sure that this won't be a lingering issue before they give him the all-clear to catch for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic later this spring. Fair enough for the club to proceed with caution, here, as Cervelli hasn't exactly proven to be the most durable of players. Last season, he appeared in just 101 games due to injury concerns.
