      Advice: The Giants had been taking things day-to-day with their 32-year-old slugger — who has been shelved since last weekend due to soreness in his right shoulder — but on Wednesday they felt it was time to throw in the towel and sit him down rather than playing short-handed any longer.       The Giants placed Soler on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a right shoulder strain, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: Soler's shoulder has caused him to miss the last three games, and he'll now officially be sidelined for another several days. The move is retroactive to Sunday, so it's possible the 32-year-old slugger is able to return in a week, but the Giants will wait and see how his shoulder heals.     • Chris Bassitt pitches into seventh in victory
      Chris Bassitt pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball and struck out six Wednesday as the Blue Jays bested the Phillies 5-3.

      Advice: The Jays wanted a little extra from Bassitt today with Yimi Garcia still unavailable and a tired bullpen after Tuesday’s 10-1 loss, and they got it, even though Bassitt didn’t get through seven as he would have liked.     • Pirates will promote Paul Skenes to start Saturday
      The Pirates announced Wednesday that top pitching prospect Paul Skenes will be promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis to make his major league debut Saturday against the Cubs.

      Advice: The 21-year-old fireballer was making a mockery of the hitting at Triple-A with Indianapolis, registering a 0.99 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and a ludicrous 45/8 K/BB ratio over 27 1/3 innings of work in his seven starts. The Pirates are going to limit his innings this season, which will curtail some of his upside in the wins department, but he’s going to be an immediate impact contributor in all fantasy leagues and needs to be rostered everywhere at this point.       Bassitt (3-5) earned the win Wednesday over the Phillies, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out six.

      Advice: It was an impressive outing from Bassitt, as the right-hander limited a powerful Phillies offense to just three hits to snap a three-start losing streak. It's been an inconsistent start to the year for Bassitt though he seems to be rounding into form of late, delivering back-to-back quality starts. He lowered his ERA to 5.06 with a 1.55 WHIP and 40:20 K:BB across his first 42.2 innings this year.       The Pirates announced that Skenes will be promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Saturday against the Cubs at PNC Park.

      Advice: Skenes likely won't be officially added to the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster until Saturday in advance of what should be one of the most highly anticipated MLB debuts for a pitching prospect in recent memory. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft, Skenes has been utterly dominant through his first seven starts at Indianapolis this season, pitching to a 0.99 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 45:8 K:BB over 27.1 innings. While he shouldn't be expected to immediately replicate the sterling ratios he produced in the minors, the flame-throwing right-hander should continue to make bats miss at a high clip as he makes the jump to the majors. The Pirates haven't revealed what the impending addition of Skenes means for the rest of the pitching staff, but the club could move to a six-man rotation to help keep the prized 21-year-old's workload in check during the 2024 season.
