    • Jackson Merrill (groin) returns to action Saturday
Jackson Merrill (groin) returned to the Padres’ starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Merrill missed each of the previous two games due to minor tightness in his right groin. He’s right back out there on Saturday though, starting in center field and batting eighth against Ranger Suarez and the Phillies. The 21-year-old rookie outfielder is hitting an impressive .318/.378/.409 with a homer, 12 RBI and four stolen bases in his first 27 games in the big leagues. Rotoworld 31 minutes ago

    • Back in action Saturday
Merrill (groin) is starting in center field and batting eighth Saturday against the Phillies.

Advice: Groin tightness has prevented Merrill from playing in the Padres' last two games, but he is seemingly feeling better heading into Saturday's contest. The 21-year-old is 5-for-18 with four RBI across his last five games, though all five of his hits in that span have been singles. Rotowire.com 56 minutes ago

    • Another strong outing
Sale (3-1) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over seven innings in a 6-2 victory over the Guardians. He struck out six.

Advice: The veteran lefty has been healthy and dominant to kick off 2024, and he completely shut down the Cleveland offense after serving up a leadoff homer to Steven Kwan. Sale has worked seven-plus innings in three straight starts for the first time since June 2018, and he's allowed three runs or less in four of his five outings so far for Atlanta. Sale will take a 3.69 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 33:7 K:BB through 31.2 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Seattle. Rotowire.com Today, 7:39 am

    • Brandon Marsh collects three hits, homer in rout
Brandon Marsh went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI in a 9-3 rout of the Padres on Friday.

Advice: The Phillies were able to sock five homers on Friday night — four of those off Joe Musgrove — and Marsh took Musgrove deep with a runner on to give Philadelphia a 5-0 lead. He also doubled in a run in the first, and the three-hit night has the 26-year-old slashing .291/.329/.570. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:28 pm

    • Homers, drives in three
Marsh went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and three RBI in Friday's win over the Padres.

Advice: Marsh knocked an RBI double in the first inning followed by a two-run blast in the third, both coming against Joe Musgrove. It was Marsh's sixth long ball of the year, though he had just one over his previous 11 games before Friday's big performance. He's now slashing .291/.329/.570 with nine extra-base hits and 16 RBI through 85 plate appearances this season. Friday's game was his second multi-hit showing over his last 14 contests. • Chris Sale shuts down Guardians in notching win
Chris Sale held the Guardians to one run and two hits in seven innings Friday in the Braves’ 6-2 victory.

Advice: Sale gave up a leadoff homer to Steven Kwan in the first and pretty much nothing else. The other hit was a single, and he walked just one. He’s 3-1 with a 3.69 ERA in five starts, all of which have come on at least five days’ rest. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:03 pm

    • Not starting Friday
Merrill (groin) is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Phillies, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Advice: Merrill was taken out of the lineup ahead of Thursday's loss to the Rockies as a precaution, and he was expected to be back Friday, per Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. It appears the groin injury is still lingering, however, and the rookie outfielder will not start for a second consecutive game. With Merrill out of the lineup, Jose Azocar will start in center field, Jurickson Profar will be in left field and Manny Machado will make his return from his paternity leave to start at third base. • Jackson Merrill (groin) remains out of lineup
Jackson Merrill (groin) remained out of the Padres’ starting lineup for Friday night’s game against the Phillies.

Advice: The 21-year-old outfielder had portrayed optimism that him being held out of the lineup on Thursday was a precautionary measure and that he wouldn’t be forced to miss any extended time. Hopefully that’s still the case, but it’s a bit discouraging to see him held out once more. Jose Azocar will start in his place in center field and will bat ninth against Aaron Nola and the Phillies on Friday night. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:26 pm

    • Pitches eighth inning Thursday
Payamps pitched a scoreless eighth inning of Thursday's 7-5 win over the Pirates, giving up one hit and one walk en route to claiming his third hold of the season.

Advice: Just one day after notching his fourth save of the season, Payamps moved to a setup role Thursday, with Trevor Megill coming on in the ninth inning to nab his first save. Brewers manager Pat Murphy hasn't clarified that Megill will be the team's top option for save chances moving forward, so Payamps could end finding himself as part of a committee at closer with Megill and perhaps Abner Uribe.
