      Advice: Gimenez had gone 0-for-15 with one walk and a stolen base over his previous four games. He snapped the skid with a fourth-inning solo shot, his second homer of the year. The second baseman is at a .242/.307/.342 slash line with 20 RBI, 20 runs scored and five stolen bases through 38 contests. He's remained in the No. 2 spot in the order versus right-handers since Steven Kwan (hamstring) went on the injured list, but the Guardians haven't gotten much hitting from the trio of Estevan Florial, Brayan Rocchio or Tyler Freeman, who had all gotten looks at leadoff in that span.       Verlander (2-1) earned the win after he pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out eight batters in Sunday's 9-3 victory over the Tigers.

      Advice: Verlander was back to being sharp Sunday, limiting Detroit to just four baserunners while recording a season-high eight punchouts. The 41-year-old was coming off of allowing seven runs over five innings against the Yankees on Tuesday, but he rebounded with his third quality start over five outings in 2024.       Justin Verlander blanked the Tigers for seven innings and struck out eight in the Astros’ 9-3 victory Sunday.

      Advice: Despite never throwing a pitch over 95 mph, Verlander induced eight pop outs and allowed just two hard-hit balls in a masterclass today.       Blake Snell delivered a dominant performance in his minor league rehab start at Single-A San Jose on Sunday, retiring all 12 hitters that he faced in order — seven of them via the strikeout.

      Advice: Of course that’s the type of dominance that you would expect from a reigning National League Cy Young award winner squaring off against Single-A competition. Nonetheless, it was nice to see Snell pitching well on a mound once again. He only threw 46 pitches in the outing, so it’s unclear if he’ll require another minor league tune-up to get stretched out further, or if he’ll be deemed ready to return to the Giants’ rotation after this one.     • Aaron Judge homers in win over Rays
      Aaron Judge went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in a 10-6 win over the Rays on Sunday.

      Advice: Judge’s homer was a 374-foot shot that left the bat at 106.7 mph. In fact, Judge had three of the five hardest-hit balls of the day, including a 109.9 mph single in the first inning and a 106.7 mph flyout in the eighth inning that had a .770 xBA and would have been a home run in 10 MLB stadiums. The Yankees slugger is not off to a great start to the season, but he went 7-for-21 this week with three home runs and seven RBI, so perhaps he’s starting to feel like himself a bit.       Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that the team hasn’t made a decision as to whether Shohei Ohtani (back) is available off the bench for Sunday’s game against the Padres.

      Advice: Roberts noted that Ohtani was able to take part in some pregame activity, but the team ultimately decided to give the 29-year-old a day off after leaving Saturday with back tightness. Most importantly, it sounds like Ohtani has a good chance to be back for Monday’s game against the Giants. According to ESPN.com, manager Dave Roberts said he had minimal concern about Ohtani's health, but the star designated hitter will nonetheless sit out the series finale in San Diego.       Advice: All of the damage against Miller came in the top of the third, when the 25-year-old issued a leadoff walk to Lawrence Butler to open the frame, followed by back-to-back singles. The right-hander allowed only two hits outside of that inning and retired 10 of the final 12 batters he faced, but he still got stuck with his third loss of the season due to a lack of run support.
