    • Matt McLain (shoulder) scratched from Mon. lineup
Matt McLain was scratched from the Reds’ lineup for Monday’s game against the Giants with left shoulder soreness.

Advice: According to the team, the decision is for precautionary reasons. This isn’t great news for the 24-year-old who was already dealing with an oblique injury earlier this spring. He’s played in just five Spring Training games and has yet to record a hit. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:03 pm

    • Scratched with shoulder issue
McLain was scratched from Monday's exhibition against the Giants due to left shoulder soreness.

Advice: The team notes that this move was merely precautionary, but McLain's status will be worth keeping an eye on over the next few days as the 2024 campaign nears. Yan Contreras will start at shortstop Monday evening in McLain's place. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 5:02 pm

    • Tanner Bibee fans four against White Sox on Monday
Tanner Bibee struck out four batters and allowed just one earned run in Monday’s game against the White Sox.

Advice: Bibee struck out his most batters in a start this camp and has at least three strikeouts in three of his four spring starts. The lone run allowed came in the third inning when the White Sox had the bases loaded and Brayan Rocchio grounded out, but Deyvison De Los Santos came home on a fielder’s choice. Last season, Bibee posted a 2.98 ERA, 1.18 WHIP across 142 innings in his first season with the Guardians and has plenty of upside heading into his second season in the majors. • Jake Burger crushes first spring homer in win
Jake Burger hit his first spring homer off Josh Hader as the Marlins edged an Astros split-squad 6-5 on Monday.

Advice: It was a 432-foot shot. Burger is just 5-for-36 with a 13/1 K/BB this spring, but he’s no longer in a situation in which he has to worry about playing time. He might spend a fair amount of time DHing, but he’ll be a lineup fixture for the Marlins after his 34-homer campaign last year. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:46 pm
    • Looks sharp in live BP
Garrett (shoulder) threw live batting practice Sunday to Jazz Chisholm and Jake Burger and showed no issues, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The southpaw sat 90-92 miles per hour with his fastball and gave Chisholm fits with his slider and changeup. Garrett won't be ready for Opening Day, but the shoulder soreness he reported at the beginning of camp appears to be gone, and he can begin to ramp up in earnest. He's expected to miss the first few weeks of the regular season, dealing another blow to a Miami rotation that will be without Sandy Alcantara (elbow) throughout 2024 and could also be down Edward Cabrera (shoulder) and Eury Perez (elbow/finger) to kick off the campaign. • Cruising in spring
Bieber has allowed three runs on five hits and six walks while striking out 12 over 11.1 innings across three Cactus League starts.

Advice: Bieber racked up eight of those strikeouts over 5.2 innings Sunday versus the Reds. After dealing with elbow inflammation in 2023, the right-hander had no restrictions entering spring training and has delivered strong results. Nothing's set in stone yet, but it's likely Bieber will make one more spring start and figures to be in contention for the Opening Day start March 28 versus the Athletics. • Sharp third time out
Gallen allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over 4.1 scoreless innings in Sunday's Cactus League start against the Angels.

Advice: Gallen threw 58 pitches (34 strikes) in his third Cactus League start and had to pitch into the fifth inning to get the count up that high. The right-hander said Sunday was the best he's felt this spring, per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. Gallen will get one more spring start that should prepare him for the pitch-count range he'll need to be at for Opening Day. Rotowire.com Sunday, 8:07 pm

    • Shane Bieber piles up eight strikeouts in victory
Shane Bieber was dominant in Saturday’s Cactus League victory over the Reds, piling up eight strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings of one-run baseball.

Advice: The 28-year-old hurler scattered just two hits and two walks on the evening. The only tally against him came in his final inning of work as Bieber allowed a leadoff double to Luke Maile and punched out the next two hitters before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Unfortunately, Anthony Gose allowed an RBI single that allowed Maile to score. His eight punchouts on the evening came courtesy of Elly De La Cruz (twice), Jake Fraley, Maile, Matt McLain (twice), Jonathan India and Will Benson. Bieber now holds a 2.38 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 12/6 K/BB ratio over 11 1/3 innings on the spring. He appears to be ready for Opening Day. Rotoworld Sunday, 6:27 pm
    • Matt McLain bats leadoff against Guardians
Matt McLain went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts as the Reds fell to the Guardians in Cactus League competition.

Advice: While it was a rough night at the plate for the 24-year-old infielder, it was interesting to note that he slid up to the leadoff spot in the Reds’ lineup with TJ Friedl (wrist). He appears to be the most likely candidate to fill that role at the start of the regular season while Friedl recovers from a fractured wrist. For the spring, he’s still looking for his first hit, going 0-for-13 through his first five contests. Rotoworld Sunday, 6:27 pm
