    • Throws 74 pitches in return
Dunning (3-3) took the loss Wednesday against Philadelphia, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk over 3.1 innings. He struck out four.

Advice: Dunning hadn't made a start since May 4 after enduring an IL stint due to a strained rotator cuff and was limited to 74 pitches overall. He looked rusty, giving up a solo homer to J.T. Realmuto in the third and sending a pick-off attempt toward second base into the outfield to allow Nick Castellanos to score from third during the second frame. Dunning should remain on a pitch count for the next start or two as he gets fully stretched out. The 29-year-old is tentatively scheduled to face the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. • Starting Thursday
Smith-Shawver will be recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Thursday's game against the Cubs, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Advice: Smith-Shawver will be making his first big-league start of 2024 on Thursday after logging a 6.10 ERA and 1.52 WHIP through 31 innings across eight starts in Triple-A. He appeared in six games for Atlanta last season with mixed results, though he could find some success against a Cubs offense that ranks 10th in the National League with a .683 OPS. • Earns fifth win
Bello (5-2) allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out six over six innings to earn the win over the Rays on Wednesday.

Advice: Bello completed six innings for the second time in eight outings this season, and he earned his second quality start in the process. The Rays scored three times in the second inning, but the Red Sox offense rallied for eight runs over the fifth and sixth frames to give Bello plenty of support. The right-hander is now at a 4.04 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB through 42.1 innings. Walks typically haven't been an outsized issue for Bello, so there's not much reason for concern that he was a little wild Wednesday. He's projected to make his next start on the road versus the Orioles. Rotowire.com 22 minutes ago

    • AJ Smith-Shawver to start for Braves Thursday
AJ Smith-Shawver will start for the Braves on Thursday in their series finale against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Advice: The 21-year-old hurler made six appearances (five starts) for the Braves during the 2023 campaign, posting a 4.26 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 20/11 K/BB ratio across 25 1/3 innings of work. He makes for a decent streaming option on Thursday’s slate, especially with the mighty Braves’ offense backing him. Rotoworld 24 minutes ago

    • Juan Soto homers twice in win
Juan Soto went 2-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI as the Yankees defeated the Mariners 7-3 on Wednesday.

Advice: It has been a magical first season in the Bronx for Soto who heard “MVP” chants after his second big fly. He’s been every bit as advertised for the Yankees and fantasy managers alike with a .313/.409/.978 slash line and 13 homers so far this season. Rotoworld 26 minutes ago

    • Brayan Bello tosses quality start, wins
Brayan Bello allowed three earned runs and four hits in a win over the Rays on Wednesday. He walked four and struck out six.

Advice: Bello keeps with these good but not great starts. The win and QS are nice, but there’s this next level Bello is still trying to reach. If he gets there, it will be on the heels of his improving slider. He showed a willingness to throw it back-foot to some of the Rays’ left-handed batters, but they only chased one out of the four he threw there. He’ll take a 4.04 ERA into his next start on Tuesday in Baltimore. Rotoworld 58 minutes ago

    • Dane Dunning chased in fourth inning
Dane Dunning allowed three earned runs in 3 ⅓ innings on Wednesday against the Phillies. He struck out four and walked one in a loss.

Advice: Dunning’s first start back off the IL was not great. He allowed a pair of unearned runs early after an error by Nathaniel Lowe and then a throwing error of his own. Then JT Realmuto tagged him for a solo home run before Edmundo Sosa smacked a three-run shot after Dunning let two men on and was pulled. While a surprising source of strikeouts so far, Dunning has allowed plenty of hard contact and is walking more batters than he did last season. He’ll look to get right next Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. Rotoworld Today, 6:34 pm

    • Comes up short in first loss
Skubal (6-1) took the loss Wednesday as the Tigers were downed 8-3 by the Royals, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out six.

Advice: In a matchup of elite southpaws, Skubal wasn't able to keep pace with Cole Ragans and failed to complete six innings for only the second time this season in 10 starts, while tying his season high in runs allowed. Skubal also served up a solo shot to Nelson Velazquez in the fourth inning, just the fourth homer off him in 60 innings. Skubal will take a 2.25 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 72:10 K:BB into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Pirates. Rotowire.com Today, 6:26 pm

    • Freddy Peralta handed tough-luck loss
Freddy Peralta fired seven one-run innings on Wednesday striking out seven and walking one in a loss to the Marlins.

Advice: Peralta’s only mistake was a 3-1 fastball to Jazz Chisholm in the first inning that wound up in the seats. Even in that at-bat Peralta missed some borderline pitches to fall behind. Still, he was fantastic Wednesday after scuffling to a 6.19 ERA May. He likely has better times ahead while his strikeout rate stays high and walk rate stays manageable. Rotoworld Today, 5:51 pm
